We want to clarify recent concerns in the softball community surrounding the interpretation of illegal pitches. During the 2010 softball season, some have seen a rise in the number of illegal pitches called by collegiate umpires and inquired about rule changes and or application of the rule. The only change to the pitching rule is Rule 10.2.1.1, pitcher’s foot position to take the signal.

Umpires have stepped up to call illegal pitches as never before, and are realizing that the cleanest, most honest way to call the game is to rule on all violations without discretion. Calling illegal pitches consistently is neither easy nor pleasant, and the SUIP realizes this season, because of the increased vigilance on pitching, has been a particularly difficult one.

The Granting Time clinic video has been removed from the video section because with the new interpretations concerning the batter stepping out of the batter’s box, the catcher aborting her position and the time between pitches rule some of the information on the that video is no longer correct.
If you downloaded that video please either delete it or no longer use it as instruction.

Quizzes will be posted throughout the season for you to test your knowledge of the rules and mechanics. Taking the Quizzes is not required. They are for your personal edification and scores will not be used for any type of qualification.

To access a Quiz, click on the Testing Tab above. A new Quiz will go up every two weeks on a Monday. At that time the previous Quiz will no longer be able to be taken.

Because we are interested in and value your opinion, we plan to conduct a series of surveys throughout the season. We will use the information gathered to help guide us in future mechanic or philosophical changes in the manual.

To access the survey, click on the "What Do You Think?" title in the left side panel. We will post a new survey approximately every three weeks and will post the results of the previous survey at that time.
